The Certified in Exhibition Management (CEM) designation

In the last issue of Expofiles, we asked TSNN.com readers to submit questions concerning areas of the industry they wanted to learn more about. One question asked by several people dealt with the process of becoming a certified event planner or show producer. The information below outlines how to receive a Certified in Exhibition Management designation.

WHAT: The Certified in Exhibition Management (CEM) designation was created in 1975 to provide a professional designation for individuals in the exhibition industry. The designation was formed to raise professional standards and is recognized throughout the industry as the premier mark of professional achievement.

To earn the designation, participants must complete a nine-part program within three years. The program is composed of seven mandatory courses and two courses chosen from five available electives. Advanced-level courses are also available for CEMs to continue their professional education and obtain re-certification.

WHO: The International Association for Exhibition Management (IAEM) offers the designation. IAEM provides leadership, service, education and benefits to professionals in the exhibition industry.

WHY: The CEM designation was put into place to raise professional standards and provide a vehicle for certification for exhibition professionals.

WHEN: Classes required to obtain the certification are available year-round.

WHERE: The designation is attainable through classes that are offered online; by taking self-paced courses; and through on-location classes at IAEM’s Professional Development Conference & Supplier Showcase (held twice annually), Expo! Expo! - IAEM’s Annual Meeting & Exhibition, and at the special CEM Learning programs held in Chicago, Illinois, Dallas, Texas and Atlanta, Georgia

HOW: People interested in working toward their CEM designation may receive more information online at www.iaem.org/cem.
