The Metropolitan Pier & Exposition Authority, which owns Chicago’s McCormick Place and Navy Pier, recently named eight new board members, none of whom directly are in the trade show industry.
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel were each allotted four appointments under state law, and the new board appointments will replace the interim board that was in place to oversee changes made to MPEA’s operation of McCormick Place.

The Hong Kong Trade and Development Council’s Hong Kong International Jewellery Show continued to draw strong attendance numbers, with the recent show attracting 38,000 buyers, a 3-percent increase, compared with last year’s event.
A significant portion of the attendance increase at the event, held Feb. 16-20 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, came from the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) countries, with an 8-percent increase, compared with last year’s event.

The Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) reported at total of 49 international and regional conventions were signed for Malaysia in 2011. MyCEB partnered with the Ministry of Tourism, Sarawak Convention Bureau, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and other strategic partners to secure various business events. Large scale events with over 4,000 delegates include the International Dragon Award (IDA), the IAS HIV Conference in Pathogenesis, treatment and Prevention and Women Deliver Conference, all taking place in 2013.

Australia-based exhibition organiser, Exhibitions and Trade Fairs (ETF), announced the postponement of the company’s special events tradeshow – Melbourne’s Event Showcase (formerly RSVP Melbourne). ETF cited residual effects of the global financial crisis, the consolidation of event suppliers and reduced marketing budgets as deciding factors to postpone the 2012 edition of the show.

London-listed media company, UBM, released its full-year results for the year ended 31st December 2011. UBM’s revenues were up 9.3 percent year-on-year from £889 million to £972 million. Adjusted group operating profits increased 18 percent from £172 million to £202 million.

The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia plans to double the total space rented at trade shows next year by promoting a total of 14 destinations within the country. The ministry will reportedly highlight cities other than the traditional MICE hubs of Jakarta and Bali to promote Indonesia’s overall MICE potential.

The International Roofing Expo recently saw a 3-percent increase in attendees to 8,382 when it ran Feb. 22-24 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando.
This year’s increase was the second one in a row for the show, which is owned by Hanley Wood Exhibitions and had an 18-percent increase for its 2011 event.
“We are very pleased that the show generated an increase in attendance for the second consecutive year,” said Lindsay Roberts, director of the International Roofing Expo.

Rumors recently had been swirling about the fate of the Trade Show Exhibitors Association, but now the organization’s fate has been sealed with its board voting to transfer its members, intellectual assets and administrative management to the Exhibitor Appointed Contractor Association.
Pending final approval of this agreement by TSEA’s members, the organization will be dissolved and a newly named umbrella industry association will be formed under the leadership of EACA’s Executive Director Jim Wurm.
