American Psychiatric Association, Heart Rhythm Society Both Give Back During Their Annual Meetings

May 21, 2012

When the American Psychiatric Association Heart Rhythm Society recently held their annual meetings, they decided to leave a lasting impact and give back to the local host communities.

The APA’s meeting was held May 5-9 at Philadelphia’s Pennsylvania Convention Center and the association made a pledge to make a group donation to the Philadelphia Mental Health Center at the culmination of the event.

Donations were made throughout the convention, and the APA matched every dollar that was donated by attendees.

The APA 2012 Meeting also featured host Edward M. Kennedy, Jr. as the 2012 William C. Menninger Memorial Convocation Lecturer.

In addition, there was a moderated discussion that kicked off the event between University of Pennsylvania, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry Aaron T. Beck, M.D., along with SUNY Upstate Medical University and Baylor University Professor Glen O. Gabbard, M.D.

The Heart Rhythm Society also decided to do some good in the city of Boston before, during and after their annual meeting also held in early May at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center.

In an effort to raise awareness and support consumer education about heart rhythm disorders, particularly Atrial Fibrillation (AF) and Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), the Heart Rhythm Society launched a Boston Citywide Awareness Campaign to coincide with Heart Rhythm 2012.

The awareness campaign was developed to increase the City of Boston's knowledge of the symptoms, warning signs and available treatment options for these two disease-states.

Atrial Fibrillation and Sudden Cardiac Arrest are the two most common arrhythmia disorders and affect millions of people worldwide.

The effort will last through the month of May and be supported by corporate sponsors through media and public events.

Here is a list of some of the events that are being held:

-  Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick proclaimed May Cardiac Arrhythmia Awareness Month.

-   A mobile education unit featuring cardiovascular risk assessments for the public was set up.

-   “Living and Thriving with the Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death” seminar was held for patients and caregivers affected by or at risk for SCA.
