Sydney to Get Interim Exhibition Venue

October 8, 2012

The New South Wales (NSW) State Government has announced plans to create an interim exhibition site at Glebe Island for major exhibitions displaced during the three-year redevelopment of the Sydney International Convention, Exhibition and Entertainment Precinct (SICEEP) at Darling Harbour.

The interim venue will be named the Glebe Island Expo and includes a 15,000 square meter pavilion with a further 10,000 square meters available for large exhibitions and trade shows. Glebe Island will be available to host events from December 2013 to late 2016 with an estimated building cost of around US$20 million.

The state government has reportedly appointed APP to be in charge of running the tender to design, build and operate Glebe Island Expo. According to the Exhibition and Events Association of Australia (EEAA), some of the larger Sydney-based events including the Australian International Motor Show will relocate to the Sydney Olympic Park venue.

Joyce DiMascio, general manager of EEAA, said, “Identifying Glebe Island Expo is an important milestone, but even more important now is getting the finer details and speeding up the process as this decision is months overdue. Glebe Island is close to the city and offers a solution for the Sydney International Boat Show, one of the 65 major events affected by the closure of the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre. It is in everybody’s interest to make sure this site works.”
