Last year was a strong one for Reed Exhibitions Greater China, but the company has its eye on the future, with a focus on ensuring they have trained personnel to fill the ranks. China is in need of more trained professionals to work in the exhibition industry, and Reed China has made skill-building a priority. The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) reported record results for the financial year ended 31st December 2011. The number of events held at KLCC in 2011 increased 15% year-on-year rising from 1,167 events to 1,346. A total of 1.7 million delegates and visitors attended events at KLCC last year, which the venue estimates created an economic impact of US$217 million in Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia last year. GSMA, organiser of the annual Mobile Asia Congress, will expand the event to hold the first GSMA Mobile Asia Expo. The three-day event will be held at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) from 20th to 22nd June 2012. The Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centreposted a record number of events and visitors in 2011. Suntec Singapore hosted 1,600 events last year, a 5% increase over the 2010 figure. In terms of visitor number, a year-on-year growth of 4% was recorded, reaching 7.1 million. The venue also recorded occupancy rates of over 90% in the months of June, July, October and November in 2011. The New South Wales (NSW) Government has shortlisted three separate consortia for the contract bid to build the new 120,000 square metre Sydney International Convention, Exhibition and Entertainment Precinct (SICEEP) at Darling Harbour. The bidding consortia will reportedly include Australian and international players with backgrounds ranging from construction to event management. Exhibition organisers, VNU Exhibitions Asia and MMI (Shanghai), subsidiary of Messe München International, have signed an agreement to cooperate on the hosting of Green Building China (GBC 2012). MMI Shanghai will act in a supporting role to GBC, a flagship event of VNU, and will be held from 26th to 29th March at the Shanghai New International Expo Center. GBC attracted over 2,000 exhibitors in its 2011 edition, and is expected to cover around 200,000 m2 of exhibition space. In the latest Center for Exhibition Industry Research’s CEIR Index Report not only did the fourth quarter end with a 3.8-percent increase in overall trade show industry activity, compared with the same time period last year, but the industry also saw an overall 2.7-percent increase in 2011, compared with 2010. The trade show industry also continues to score better numbers than the GDP, which only grew 1.6 percent in the fourth quarter. When the 2012 International Home + Housewares Show opens its doors March 10-13 at McCormick Place in Chicago, there will be a Japan Pavilion for the first time that will feature 10 exhibitors who directly were impacted by the earthquake and ensuing tsunami last year.
