Other regions of the world may be experiencing economic troubles, but according to a recent survey released by the HongKong Exhibition and Convention Industry Association, the exhibition industry in Hong Kong is thriving. Kuala Lumpur jumped two places in the International Congress & Convention Center Association’s world convention city rankings and three places in the Asia-Pacific region’s ranking based on the number of international association meetings held in 2011, said Zulkefli Hj. The Gwangju Convention and Visitor Bureau has announced plans to expand the exhibition facilities at the Kimdaejung Convention Center (KDJCC). At a cost of US$60 million, an additional 18,000 square meters of exhibition and convention space will be added to bring the total venue space up to 53,000 square meters. Vinexpo Asia-Pacific, opened at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) last week – with a record 1,050 exhibitors from 28 countries. The three-day trade show ran from 29th to 31st May, and attracted over 15,000 visitors this year – compared with 12,617 in 2010. Global Sources ended 2011 with positive revenue results, but the beginning of 2012 wasn’t as upbeat, with first-quarter exhibition revenue dropping to $2.2 million, compared with $4.4 million the first quarter in 2011. Global Sources’ management stated the decrease in Q1 exhibition revenues resulted from the rescheduling of one trade show from January 2012 to December 2011. Print revenue also declined to $4.3 million in the first quarter of 2012, compared with $4.7 million in the same quarter last year.
