Marriott International Named Operator of New 1,200-Room McCormick Place Hotel

September 19, 2013

What is likely good news for trade shows at Chicago’s McCormick Place, a 1,200-room hotel is on tap to open in 2016 next to the center, with Marriot International recently named as the operator.

The hotel will be operated under the Marriott Marquis brand, the only one with this brand in the city of Chicago, according to Metropolitan Pier & Exposition Authority officials.

Development of this hotel is another step forward for Chicago’s thriving convention and trade show industry,” said Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

He added, “These hundreds of additional nearby hotels rooms will strengthen our competitive edge and help us attract new business to Chicago, creating jobs and economic impact for years to come.”

The new headquarters hotel is projected to attract approximately 15 new mid-market events per year to McCormick Place, generating roughly 80,000 additional attendees, according to MPEA officials.

MPEA CEO Jim Reilly said the Marriott Marquis would be a great addition to the emerging McCormick Place Entertainment District.

“We are very pleased to incorporate Marriott’s iconic business brand into the hotel planned for the McCormick Place Entertainment District,” Reilly said.

He added, “The Marriott Marquis brand will be the perfect complement to the headquarters hotel concept and we look forward to Marriott’s input regarding design, construction and marketing of this flagship hotel.”

The new hotel, to be developed by MPEA and connected to McCormick Place West via  skybridge, will provide the facilities and amenities to serve as the headquarters for groups holding shows at McCormick Place.

"Marriott International is delighted to have been selected by the MPEA to bring the Marriott Marquis brand to McCormick Place,” said Noah Silverman, Marriott’s chief development officer, North America Full Service Hotels.

He added, “This hotel will be perfectly suited for the tremendous conference and meeting business that the City of Chicago attracts, and we look forward to finalizing agreements with the MPEA to establish a presence for the Marriott Marquis brandin this unique location.”

The number of hotel rooms within walking distance from the convention center will be doubled, especially with the opening of the Hyatt Regency’s new, 460-room tower in addition to the hotel’s current 800 rooms, also owned by MPEA.
