The recent American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions conference (AHA), held Nov. 3-7 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, broke a record as the largest medical meeting ever held in the city. AHA attracted approximately 20,000 cardiovascular medical professionals from five continents and also was the second largest citywide convention overall in Los Angeles. The Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, the largest gathering of cardiovascular health and care professionals in the country, was held Oct. 27-31, attracting close to 4,000 delegates to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The event is co-hosted by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and brings together a total of 20 different organizations. The recent staging of Messe Duesseldorf’s MEDICA 2012, International Trade Fair with Congress – World Forum for Medicine, and the collocated COMPAMED 2012, International Trade Fair – High tech solutions for medical technology, attracted 130,600 visitors from 120 countries to Duesseldorf, Germany. More than 700 participants from around the world are expected to attend the Mid-Pacific Conference on Birth and Primal Health Research from Oct. 26-28 at the Hawai‘i Convention Center. The meeting, which was preceded in February 2010 by the Mid-Atlantic Conference on Birth and Primal Health Research in the Canary Islands, is being held in the Pacific for the first time. Two of Messe Duesseldorf’s recent medical-related shows in Singapore grew in attendance. The staging of OS+H Asia, 8th Occupational Safety & Health Exhibition for Asia in Singapore concluded with a strong increase in exhibitor and visitor participation: 163 exhibiting companies from 22 countries showcased their products to 5,918 trade visitors - with 20 percent coming from overseas, primarily from Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. When Reed Exhibitions’ International Vision Expo West recently closed its doors at the Sands Expo & Convention Center in Las Vegas, the unaudited tally of eye care professionals attending the event was 12,077, which show management said was on par with last year’s show. Medical meetings have continued to grow, despite the overall economy and other pressures the sector has faced in recent years. The Healthcare Convention & Exhibitors Association recently released its annual list of the top 50 largest U.S. medical meetings held in 2011, and average reported professional attendance increased 3.2 percent from 2010, while average reported total attendance increased 2.2 percent. Nielsen Expositions’ Medtrade 2012 still is two months out from opening its doors Oct. 16-18 at the Georgia World Congress Center, but it already has nearly sold out of all of its exhibit space. Space sold quickly, with 90 percent of the floor booked just two months after its April show wrapped with the trend continuing through the summer months.
