U.K.-based United Business Media bought a 70-percent stake in the Catersource Conference & Trade Show and sister show Event Solutions on behalf of UBM Live for $5 million. Catersource services the catering industry, and Event Solutions services the event planning industry. Business-to-business e-commerce platform, Alibaba.com, held an offline sourcing event in Mumbai earlier this month. The event was held June 1-2 and reportedly attracted more than 200 Indian suppliers registered on the company’s online sourcing website. The two-day event consisted of a seminar on the first day featuring panel discussions, networking and Q&A sessions. Pico Thailand, the Thai-listed subsidiary of one of the largest exhibition contractors in Asia, Pico Far East Holdings, has announced its results for the six months ended April 30. Revenues for the period were $22 million – an increase of 73 percent, compared with same period in 2010. The company recorded a net profit of $1.5 million in the period, three times the profit of $452,000 recorded last year.   Pico Thailand also reported the results for the quarter ended April 30. The Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO) announced the extension of the “Strategic MICE Stimulation Program” until the end of 2011. The program, originally due to end this month, received wide support from local MICE industry players according to the Macau Convention and Exhibition Association (MCEA). Launched in May 2009, the program has supported 246 events in total, of which 95 were meetings and conventions, 47 were exhibitions and 104 incentive programs. Everything Channel, a UBM subsidiary, organised its first Indian virtual show, the CRN Virtual Channel Show, May 17-18. The virtual event was presented in UBM Studio’s Virtual Seminar Center. The online event reportedly attracted more than 600 attendees from across India. Medan, the largest city on the Indonesian island of Sumatra is reportedly in the process of establishing the Medan Convention Bureau. The convention and visitor’s bureau (CVB) will help promote the domestic and regional MICE market on Sumatra. The Medan Municipal Government is reportedly in the process of establishing a board for the CVB as well as securing funding for the bureau. The IMPACT Exhibition and Convention Center has secured the hosting and organising of more trade shows at the Bangkok venue, following last month’s announcement of a partnership agreement with Germany-based Messe München International for the strategic cooperation to organise CONSTECH 2011. Hainan's largest exhibition venue, the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center (HICEC) will be completed June 28 after a 17-month construction period. HICEC is made up of a 77,000 square meter exhibition centre, as well as a 42,000 sq. m. convention centre. The venue will reportedly host nine exhibitions and four conferences within this year and will host the Pan-PRD Regional Cooperation and Development Forum in 2012. Thailand is directly targeting the luxury MICE market with a new initiative that’s part of the Thailand Convention & Visitors Bureau’s “Believe in Thailand” campaign.
